Humans surpass robots at Mercedes Benz!
Mercedes-Benz is replacing some of its robots on the Mercedes-Benz S-Class and several other new models with real live humans. Right now, we don’t have to worry about how robots are taking over our jobs, because for now, it turns out, robots can’t keep up with the degree of customization that the automaker has to offer in its S-Class sedans.
“Robots can’t deal with the degree of individualization and the many variants that we have today,” said the company’s head of production Markus Schaefer. “We’re saving money and safeguarding our future by employing more people.”
Robots aren’t, however, going extinct from the Mercedes-Benz Sindelfingen factory for now. Other automobile companies like BMW and Audi are all working on sensor-packed robots that can be friendly and safe for their living breathing colleagues.
This change comes at a time when a number of companies are replacing people with robotic devices. International Federation of Robotics (IFR) released a survey recently, stating that 1.3 million of the industrial robots will be in use by 2018.
The Sindelfingen plant reportedly rolls out over 400,000 vehicles per year, and the process can be much faster with the help of real people. Rather than taking weeks to reprogramme the robots for shifting assembly patterns, the manufacturer can shift the line in a weekend or so. However, as Mercedes continues to expand the options available on its vehicles, the robots aren’t able to adapt to new tasks. They’re better suited for doing the same jobs repeatedly.
