Closely following on the heels of Youtube, Facebook has come up with a new feature that allow users to download videos offline!

The feature, which is currently on a test run in India, allow users to download the videos they like on their smart phone when connected to Wifi and play it later when there is no internet connection. It is perfect for times when one is travelling, as then there is no stable connection.

However, the glitch here is that it is only applicable to videos that are posted originally on Facebook profiles and pages and it will only be made available on the Facebook app, so cannot be saved to the phone memory.

Also, for those who aren’t very comfortable with the idea of their video being downloaded, there is an option provided on the page where they can simply tick to prohibit the downloading of their content. And for those who are still confused there is a small question mark on the tab that explains the setting further.

The move clearly highlights the emphasis that the social media platform is trying to put on videos and why not, because moving pictures is at the moment causing the highest rate of user engagement, which in turn will help the site boost revenue. The sudden inflow of videos and GIFs by publishers across the world only explains it further.

With this development, Facebook has not only taken a step closer to its immediate rival Youtube but has also extended its reach to even those users in India who do not have access to stable internet connectivity.

And once positive responses start coming in, the feature would be launched properly and this time in other countries as well. So far, it is not yet clear which those other countries would be.
