Alexander McQueen and drama go hand in hand, be it his collections or the story of his life, for that matter! The design kingpin who died in 2010 has been the beloved topic for many admirers across the world, and has touched many lives and lifestyles in myriad of ways. From a West End play, to countless commemorative books, the range of his work is diverse.
Now, the story of his complicated friendship with the late Isabella Blow is coming to the big screen. The movie titled—The Ripper — presumably has reference to McQueen’s Jack the Ripper–themed student-thesis collection and is being developed by Maven Pictures, which is Trudie Styler’s production company. Screenwriter Gesha-Marie Bland has penned the script. The production house has not yet provided any details about the names of the director, cast and crew.
The story picked up by the production house is a rich one especially because what McQueen brought to the stage was a reflection of the storms in his personal life.
McQueen and Blow had an intense friendship, which had its share of turmoil. As we’re aware, McQueen was named British designer of the year four times while Blow, often considered his muse was eminent for her eccentric looks, attitude and style. McQueen came from a working class background and Blow had an aristocratic root and worked for Vogue. She also worked as the style editor of London’s Sunday Times, and was the fashion director of Tatler.
Blow first met McQueen while she was working at Tatler — she saw his student collection, a macabre lineup of clothes that incorporated human hair, and sensing a kindred aesthetic spirit, immediately purchased the complete collection.
“McQueen considered Blow a muse for some time, designing elaborate clothes for her and enlisting her as a collaborator. However, when he got the top job at Givenchy, he gave his longtime friend the cold shoulder and didn’t include her on his team, a crushing moment for her. Their volatile, on-and-off friendship continued for a decade, and her depression over the rupture between them contributed to her suicide in 2007. Devastated by her death, McQueen dedicated his next collection to her. Their story may not have been Hollywood-perfect, but it definitely has the makings of a tumultuous art-house drama,” reported a media site.
