Ka Bodyscapes Runs Into Trouble With Censor Board
The movie, ‘Ka Bodyscapes’, which has brought LGBT community issues into the limelight is facing Central Board of Film Certification’s (CBFC) wrath! Based on Kerala’s LGBT and feminist movement, this movie is ‘insulting and humiliating’ the Hindu Religion, according to the letter released by CBFC. The board has denied the release of this movie claiming that it has ‘sensitive gay scenes, use of derogatory words against women and vulgar dialogues’.
The movie revolves around gay relationship and features homosexual characters and CBFC’s decision of barring its release will make you question the civil liberties in India and wonder whether India is really a democratic nation.
However, the Censor Board believes that the film portrays Hinduism in a bad light with its portrayal of Lord Hanuman with a book titled ‘I am Gay’ and it appears to give an uncomfortable revelation to the Hindu audience as they worship the Lord.

The letter has also pointed out problems with the movie showing a ‘lady masturbating’ and highlighting homosexuality by many ‘gay’ posters. However, the charges have been rejected by Jayan Cherian, the director, saying that the characters in the movie had struck a Hanuman pose in a scene holding some insignia against Section 377, India’s colonial-era law that criminalises homosexuality.

The movie is apparently not appropriate on the parameters laid down by the Censor Board and in terms of Indian viewership. “The entire content… is ridiculing, insulting and humiliating Hindu religion, in particular portraying Hindu Gods in poor light,” read a letter from CBFC, bearing a stamp of the regional CBFC office in Thiruvananthapuram.
I assume that India is still struggling in appreciating the new age approaches and the new contributions. The movies are made to enlighten you and make you think beyond the regular thought process. It is not just about supporting a cause but including LGBT’s to the mainstream culture with open arms and identifying the reality of their lifestyle. This is not happening for the first time for the movie director. Jayan Chairan, was ridiculed previously for his first film, Papilio Buddha, which ran into trouble with the Censor Board.
