David Bowie’s ‘Blackstar’ mini-series to debut on Instagram
Blackstar, David Bowie’s final album that was released just two days before his demise, is soon going to debut in a 16-episode Insta-series. The series, called Unbound, which has been written and directed by Carolynn Cecilia and Nikki Borge, will offer a visual insight of the album and debut on Instagram’s much-popular InstaMiniSeries channel.
Such a project was possible, as the channel, which is already well-known for making creative and innovative episodic programmes exclusively, caught the eye of Bowie, who saw it as an exciting new platform. This led him to give the channel’s creative team a unique pre-release access to the music of his last album “with no limits or preconditions on his part”.
The writer and producer of Unbound, Carolynn Cecilia described David Bowie as a trailblazer, not just in the world of music, but in the art of storytelling, “Whether through lyrics, melodies, film, theatre or mythical persona, he never fails to transcend WHAT WAS and set the tone -and the bar- for what CAN BE,” she said, and further continued by saying, “as story-tellers and music lovers, who better for us to be inspired by than David Bowie?”
Comprising a total of 16 episodes, Unbound will take the audience on a journey of evocative images inspired by the moods suggested in the album’s music, lyrics and artwork. The series will focus solely on visual representation of the album rather than on a linear narrative and each of its episode has been designed keeping the global audience in mind. Also, it will star Rookie Magazine founder Tavi Gevinson and Six Feet Under’s Patricia Clarkson.

★ 3RD WEEK AT #1 AS BOWIE FILLS 50% OF TOP TEN “Elvis is English…” David Bowie continues to impact the UK album chart, with ★ holding at Number 1 for a third week. He also dominates the Top 10 with the five albums pictured here, not to mention 12 spots on this week’s Official Albums Chart Top 40 and a total of 18 albums in the Top 80. This feat means Bowie is the first act to score five albums in the Top 10 since Michael Jackson managed six in 2009 after his passing. The 12 Top 40 places brings Bowie level with Elvis Presley’s chart record for simultaneous Top 40 entries, which the King achieved following his death in 1977. Blackstar, on which the series is based, was the 28th and final studio album by David Bowie. It was released worldwide on January 8, Bowie’s 69th birthday. Co-producer Tony Visconti described the album as Bowie’s “parting gift” to his fans before his death. Not only did the album get critical acclaim and commercial success but it also became Bowie’s first and only album to reach No 1 on the Billboard 200 album chart in the U.S.
The first episode of the series will hit the social media platform on February 25 at 8pm/EST, followed by others at the same time each subsequent Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.
