Adele Casts A Spell
Adele Casts A Spell
Adele is a phenomenon, her latest album “25” has sold a record-shattering 3.38 million copies in the United States through its first week, becoming the year’s biggest-selling album. That’s nearly a million more than the previous high mark for first-week sales when “N Sync” sold 2.4 million copies of “No Strings Attached” in 2000. “25” is also the first release to sell three million copies in a week since Nielsen began tallying hard sales data in 1991. Only 20 albums have ever sold more than a million copies in a week.
The most interesting fact to ponder is the turn of millennium in which she attained the victory, whenretailers were selling 700 million CDs a year, while last year just 247 million albums were sold in CDs. The climate is far less hospitable to blockbusters, but Adele stands undefeated. Setting a new high record for ‘views’ in the first 24 hours on Vevo, her song “Hello” got 100 million views in five days displacing Miley Cyrus’ “Wrecking Ball.”The song was downloaded 900,000 times in its first week which will easily surpass the previous high mark set by FloRida’s “Right Round.”According to Tubefilter’s chart, Adele’s YouTube Channel became the top most newly subscribed channel in October.
Adele has been a consistent star. Her last effort, 21, sold 11.2 million copies in the US, according to Nielsen Music. It is the tenth-largest selling album since the organization started tracking music sales and generated five hit singles. What gives another cue to her real stardom is that she achieved all this without any #hypecampaigns, or selfies or teaser releases. Adele has a very insubstantial social media presence. Is it still too early to perceive the ability of sheer talent?
Another unique approach to her success was seen with her denial to be available on streaming services. She chose not to allow websites like Spotify, Apple music, iheartRadio to play her music. Some believe this is one of the prime reasons for the monstrous number of CDs sold, but we believe its Adele’s utter magic!
In an interview regarding the same she said, “[Streaming] probably is the future, but,eh! I’ve got my CDs out on display in my house just to prove a point. Maybe CDs will have a massive comeback like vinyl did.” Adele made a comeback after five years but with this kind of sensation we can hardly complain.
