Twitteratis bring silent disease to light with hashtag #mydepressionlookslike!
The latest hashtag #mydepressionlookslike, trending on twitter has no sign of going out of trend. The silence of depression, which is usually unheard of, is bringing people upfront as they unmask what’s hidden inside them. The movement is gazing more interest with ‘Empathy’…; the trend is shining out and suggesting the world to grow empathetic towards each other.
Over the weekend as Mental Health Awareness Week drew to a close, Twitteratis shared their experiences of the disorder. Making this hashtag more important, especially for the people coping with depression, anxiety, OCD or other disorders. On Monday, hundreds of people shared their mental health struggles publicly, with this hashtag and it is being used to share powerful stories about how their lives are affected and shaped by depression in this span of lifetime.
According to the National Institute of Mental Health, “It’s an issue that remains a problem with an estimated 15.7 million of US adults grappling with it a depressive episode in 2014.”
Not much is known about the origin of this Hashtag, but one of its earliest appearances occurred back in January when a user @birdonabirdwith tweeted… #mydepressionlookslike and shared a super clean house with nothing out of place because I’m not creating anything, describing his issue of OCD. The problem of depression is not accepted by social crowd, they misunderstand a person when they admit they are depressed. Something about this hashtag is so introspective that it really encourages the society to share their problems with depression indeed, without having to fear the societal admission to it.
Nobody is perfect and while this hashtag brought light to the new borne disease of physical and mental illness, some shared their deep feelings of depression or anxiety, others wrote about painful moments which they faced masked with the depression in a smiling selfie. Other helpful hashtags are #myanxietylookslike and #mentalillnessfeelslike, which encompass a broader range of experiences.
