The latest trend in hair styling has got many women showing off their ‘secret rainbow’ hair colour on the social media.

This amusing technique of hair-do involves hiding a tuft of bright-coloured hair under the top layer that may be dyed with a lighter or less brighter shade, making the brighter shade seem to peer out of the upper layers of hair. But, the rainbow colours would remain hidden when the hair is tied up.

The “underlight” has been rising in popularity over the past six months, with thousands of curious hair- experimenting instagrammers sharing their secret pastel and rainbow hair colours online.

In November last year, Jaye Harkness, a blogger from Singapore, wowed the social media with her beautiful simple black bob, which when flipped revealed pops of purple, green and blue colours. This became instantly viral.

#tbt this hair lately a lot of people have been asking me why i dyed my hair back to black.. all i can say is i’ve been breaking grooming rules for six years now; i owe them at least a semester of no trouble from me

Since then, thousands of others have also taken to Instagram to show off their own courageous take on the ‘underlights’ technique. Now the undercuts and rainbow trends have been given a new form altogether. Russian Instagrammer Katichka posted an image with the daring new trend mashup, with a cat motif peeping from under the tresses.

“My sleepy cat with me always,” she captioned the image on Instagram. Katichka has already received over 18,000 likes on the cat-undercut photo since posting it, and pet lovers now across the world are considering immortalizing their own animals in their tresses.

Hairstylist Aliyousha said that she wanted to bring more creativity into her work, so Katichka offered up her head as a canvas. “I think the reason why everybody liked the style so much is that we make it with all the love,” Katichka says. The blogger had not expected such attention, as she said, “After the haircut, I felt a bit uncomfortable, ’cause such style attracts too much attention. For [the] first few days, I wore a hat, because in Russia such looks can be taken negatively.”

Katichka has brought a brand new, positive and colourful meaning to the trend. The blogger has received thousands of comments on Instagram since she posted the picture, and she says she’s very grateful for all of the love she’s received.

This peekaboo rainbow hair is perfect for the colour-shy beauty fans, who still want to experiment. Simply style your hair so that they cover your surprise color.

This look can be carried with absolutely no commitment, with a temporary dose of colour sticks. These temporary colours ranging in pretty springtime shades, pink, ice blue, lilac and mint, are easily available in various brands. These natural crayons are easy to apply and lets you experiment without being loyal to the trend for too long.

But this feline design is just one glorious twist and step ahead on the colourful hair craze that’s currently having a moment. Shaving designs into undercut hairstyles have been gaining a lot of attention lately, but some believe its just a fad that will pass, while others believe that it’s here to stay, at least, for a while.
