As we all know menswear operates within a much tighter framework than womenswear, in the sense that it is more rooted in reality. Hence, the majority of menswear design is inspired by references from sportswear, military uniform and tailoring. The fact that it needs to be appropriate as a part of a uniform makes the piece distinct and appealing. Belstaff used Japanese layered technical nylon to make sleek parkas that were light weight-wise but did not compensate on the warmth. A lot of the collections were covered in pockets – from Craig Green’s olive drab shirts to Hardy Amies’ anthracite grey wool suit trousers to Astrid Anderson’s parkas. Casely-Hayford’s brown jackets boasted of four spacious pockets on the front panel alone and Balmain’s details on the army pants were carried out in similar fashion.
