Viral TikTok challenge deemed to promote colourism!

The colourism promoting challenge

Among many TikTok challenges, one of them has come under fire for promoting colourism by users singing to ‘Why this Kolavari Di?’ while applying a dark filter only to reveal their original’ lighter’ skin tone.

Most of the videos under this challenge come from India where dark skin is looked down upon and fair skin is seen desirable. This conception has led to a lot of debate since the colourist approach to these videos hurt sentiments of people with dark skin.

Applying dark filter and removing it later

Many agree that the colour of skin has nothing to do with beauty, which is why people have drawn racist comparisons to the videos.

TikTok has reported that many of such videos have been taken down, but considering India’s population, such videos seem to keep popping up every now and then.
