Portraits Beyond Appearance
Portraits Beyond Appearance
This piece of art is a perfect amalgamation of creativity and technology! Artist Sergio Albiac, known for his experimental artworks created at the intersection of generative digital code and traditional media, has generated typographic collage portraits from code and transcribed voice. Sergio has investigated and explored the use of code as an art throughout his creative practice. He has weaved magic with portraiture projects like ‘Stardust’ and ‘Art motion’ made from Hubble telescope imagery, and data collected from LEXUS drivers.
In his latest project, Albiac has tried to explore the post-selfie era where a machine has applied algorithm and convincingly turned photos into imitated masterpieces, similar to computer code that is used as a medium to tell stories about human identity. Moreover, in ‘I am portraits’ collection, he has used cloud computing, real time machine learning services, custom generative computer code to create figurative interpretations of individuals participating in the project.
Sergio, generally, invites people to engage in the artwork through his experimental platform and virtual portrait studio, BEYAPP (Beyond Appearance). The concept is quite interesting where the users are expected to sit for a picture and describe themselves and their personality to the software. Thereafter, the voices are transcribed into a text, using the web speech API and then transformed and complemented by related literary and philosophical passages- all in real time. The portrait comes out as a collage of typographic texture, a combination of random letter based associations.
