Listen to Vivienne Westwood Rap About What’s Happening in the World!
Whilst the musicians, rappers et cetera try their hand at making fashion, our prodigy from the design world Vivienne Westwood seems to be doing a role swap with the rappers. Yes, she has officially released a rap.
There was a time when Givenchy’s Riccardo Tisci did a spoken word rendition of ‘Purple Rain’, and that’s quiet the closest anyone has gotten.
Now again, Vivienne, as fearless as her design philosophies, breaking rules and colour codes, is sneaking into the rap scene. The designer who gave the punks a reason to be synonymous to ‘punk rock culture’ is now sort of a rapper. Isn’t it crazy?!
The British rapper Mic Righteous collaborated with the designer and had a rap piece done by her put into his latest song ‘Be There’. “When I thought of the collaboration, Vivienne wasn’t the first rapper that came to mind,” Mic said. Vivienne attended a performance of Mic’s own spoken word poetry, and casually mentioned she’d written her own verse and that is how the collaboration was born.
The designer now also a rapper has always been a supporter of sustainable fashion and this time she’s done it again. The rap she debuted with, talks about the same. In the song ‘Be there’, she raps, “Intellectuals unite. Everybody’s talking but only our map gives the complete picture. The ice is melting. Fracking releases tonnes’ of methane. Water is more precious than oil. Plastic kills the albatross.” She goes on, about how we all should “speak with one voice” and to adopt “culture not consumption.”
“When Vivienne mentioned that she had written a rap, I didn’t even need to hear it,” Mic said. “I knew it would be perfect for this project. It wasn’t something that I had planned, it happened organically and I couldn’t be happier,” he added.
For a newbie in the business, she’s pretty endemic with passion. See for yourself, Oh! I mean listen for yourself.
